Note that Villain folds for his last $232.
I think Villain is bluffing a lot to get me off of like a pair of Kings, possibly even turning small pairs into bluffs. Even if he is going for value, it’s thin value: he doesn’t have a straight, and I’d be pretty surprised even to see a set from him. Since I can’t even beat his bluffs, there’s only one thing to do…
FTOPS Event #12: $1000 6-Max
I’ve had some deep runs lately in the Saturday $300 6-max, so I was looking forward to this event. Unfortunately, it didn’t really go my way. I lost a big pot (though not my stack) with AJ vs. AQ on a AJ7Q9 board in a 3-bet pot. My bust-out hand requires a little explaining. The guy who open limps had been doing that a fair bit, I think he was playing like 32/15. I’d just shoved over his limp the hand before.
The guy who shoves had been pretty shove-happy in general. I think he’d even open shoved like 30-some BB’s once. I recognized his name, so I don’t think he was a maniac, just a tourney donk who understood unexploitable shoving and was more comfortable playing that way.

This isn’t a bad outcome for me, as I have 33.2% equity in a 3-way pot. I imagine there are some worse Kings and probably suited connectors at least in the shover’s range, and quite possibly it’s wider than that. Since the limper was apparently trapping here, he probably has stronger stuff in his range too, though he’s also going to be folding a lot. I’m a little surprised he called with AJ, though I don’t actually think it’s a bad call given the situation.
FTOPS #6: $500 NLHE Heads Up
I finished 12th in this, out of 1024, meaning I made it to the Sweet 16. I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about hands here because I’ll probably make a video of this for Poker Savvy Plus. But here’s the quick rundown:
Round 1- Guy was awful, I don’t remember much beyond that. He started making some massive pre-flop shoves, probably because he knew he was getting outplayed, so I had to gamble with him a bit. I actually got it in bad pre-flop to a cooler but sucked out to stay alive, and I finished him off eventually.
Round 2- Pretty similar to the first, if I recall correctly.
Round 3- I drew Yuvee04, winner of an unprecedented 4 FTOPS tournaments. Apparently he’s mostly a high-limit Stud/Razz/HORSE player, though I think he won PLO and NLHE tournaments as well. He was probably my toughest opponent and had a quite unique style that was clearly influenced by playing in fixed limit games. He was a little on the passive side but made good reads and did some weird stuff like min-raising turns and rivers. Here’s a good example of him snapping me off with K-high:

This was the only match where I felt outmatched. Don’t get me wrong, I put up a good fight, but I did feel he was a little better than I was. If he had as much heads up NLHE experience as I do, I’m sure he would have mopped the floor with me. I sucked out on him, he sucked out on me, etc., we were the last match of this round to finish, but eventually I won a coin flip to bust him.
Round 4- This was another tough one. My opponent was m_reed, a very solid TAG who I’ve played with a fair bit at MSNL and who now makes videos for CardRunners. We were very evenly matched, and once again I was the last one to finish. I was fortunate to get momentum early in the match and just sort of lean on that.
Round 5- Some crazy fish. He was stupidly aggressive, bluffing a lot but sometimes in bad spots and also overplaying hands. That can be a surprisingly difficult style to play against without cards, and he semi-coolered me every time I got a good lead on him, but eventually I busted him.
Round 6- Villain was Keith “da murdera” Ferrerra, which didn’t mean a lot to me until I googled his name. Apparently he’s a pretty well known tournament player and won the Wynn Classic. I read an interview with him where he sounded pretty smart and correctly explained a polarized range, but he didn’t turn out to play as well as I was expecting. He 3-bet like 1/3 of his hands, but I just started calling and owning him post-flop. I won a big pot off of him in a pretty funny way:

We actually played a little heads up cash once, he challenged me but quickly quit. Nevertheless, he was a tough opponent. I’m not happy with the hand I busted on:

I think I ought to shove the turn. There are a few worse hands that can call, and even though air is a lot of his range, I don’t think he’s bluffing the river. My hand just looks very strong when I call turn. The river is very much a crying call, which is why I ought to just stick it in on the turn. I convinced myself this might look like a good card to bluff and maybe he can even value bet bare Aces, but pretty much I let him freeroll me and he got there.
And I just busted the Stars $500 in like 24th, dude in the CO made a questionable but I guess OK call with A9o when I shoved A8o from my BTN. Now I’m tired and pissed at poker tournaments and probably won’t play the PLO8 tomorrow, which is a shame cuz I was looking forward to it. I am playing the 1K tomorrow night though.

Gross Spot With QQ Deep in the FTP $500
We’re just inside of 100 people left in the monthly FTP $500, down from a little over 2000 who started.
UTG is a random who definitely does not play these stakes with any regularity. Googling his name reveals a few $.05/$.10 hands, so I’m sure he’s a satellite qualifier. He’s definitely playing his cards with minimal situational awareness or tournament skill, so while his opening ranges are tighter than those of a good tournament player, he’s a little on the spazzy side.
SB is a mid-stakes MTT grinder. This is definitely on the high end of events he plays, but he’s no stranger to $50-$100 buy-ins. He understands blind stealing, restealing, etc., and probably has roughly the same read on UTG that I have. I’ve been a little aggro, but nothing too out of line. Mostly just opening more than my share of pots, not a lot of 3-betting at all.
After I 3-bet, SB instantly shoved. UTG also could not have called any more quickly than he did. Also there is a lot of value to surviving this late in a soft, big buy-in tournament. The final table is going to involve playing for tens of thousands of dollars with more than a few total droolers.

Basically if both players are on QQ+, AKo, AKs, it’s a call. If we take the AK out of either one of their ranges, it’s a fold. If we add JJ into either one of their ranges, it’s a call. If it weren’t for the timing, I would have called. The fact that neither of them thought for even a second made me think AK was a lot less likely, so I folded. Shows what I know:

Maybe he calls, but I still think I’m supposed to bet here. Less than a shove might be better though. I would have been happier if the river weren’t such an “obvious” scare card that rarely actually helps my hand. In other words, I’m afraid he’s going to think something along the lines of “of course Foucault’s going to bluff when a flush draw completes on river but he rarely has a flush so I call”.
Tournament 3-Betting Dynamic
I ran deep in the $300 6-max on Full Tilt today. For much of the end-game, I had a player on my right who I recognized from the 2+2 forums but whom I’d never played for. To the best of my knowledge, he is a successful tournament pro and also a Scandinavian, so I expected him to be pretty aggressive. Early on, some fish woke up with a hand and forced me to showdown a light 3-bet:

This might look bad, especially seeing the results, but there’s something important to point out. I’m pretty sure that just shoving AT for effectively 58K over his CO min-raise to 4K would be unexploitably profitable. In other words, even if I showed him the AT, he wouldn’t have a better hand often enough to make the shove unprofitable. So folding is out of the question.
It might seem like we want fold equity, but actually if I shove he’s never folding better. Thus, a smaller 3-bet gives him room to shove worse hands that wouldn’t call a shove, which can only be good for us relative to shoving.
And as you can see, he is capable of 4-bet shoving light:

On the one hand, folding AQ in the CO for 20-odd big blinds is pretty exploitable. Not to mention I’d been naturally been playing aggressively. I’d just stolen blinds the previous hand, and in fact I was hoping someone would shove on me. A small re-raise from the Button was about the only thing I didn’t want to see. This Villain had previously called one of my pre-flop raises with a hand that couldn’t stand a re-raise from someone behind us, and sometimes donks just do donky things. With AJ I fold without too much thought, AK I’m happy enough to ship it, but AQ is the sticking point against a relative unknown. I wasn’t too happy with myself when he rolled Queens. I hate donkaments.
Cold Calling 3-Bets Out of Position
This isn’t something I do often, just because you’re basically announcing strength without charging your opponents anything, plus by spotting them position you put them in control of the betting as well. Against good players I almost always 4-bet or fold, usually fold in this spot. Against a monkey with no hand-reading, skills, though, I make exceptions:

Improving Your Relative Position
“Relative position” refers to when you must act in comparison to the player who is most likely to bet on a given street. For example, if there are several limpers, you complete the SB, the BB raises, and everyone calls, it may seem like you have the worst position. After all, you must act before everyone else. However, since the BB was the pre-flop raiser, he is more likely than anyone to bet. If you check to him, you have not revealed much about your hand, and if he bets, all of the limpers must respond to that bet before it is your turn to make a decision. In this case, your absolute position is poor, but your relative position is good.
Here is a spot where I managed to improve my relative position by checking and consequently made good use of the information my check garnered:

This was from the Sunday Million. The BB was a pretty good MTT player, someone who’s been around and presumably winning for several years. The other two were unknowns and presumably bad. When I raise UTG, bet this flop into three players, and get called twice, KQ is not looking so hot. It may be good enough to take to showdown, but I am certain I can’t play it for stacks against the BB. God knows what MP1 could have.
BB’s check on the turn reveals nothing, as I’d expect him to check his full range (and as you can see, he did check a set, so it certainly didn’t reveal weakness). If I bet the turn, I give my most skilled opponent the best relative position and risk putting a lot of money into the pot drawing dead. Instead, I check, which no matter what happens puts pressure on BB to reveal the strength of his hand.
If MP1 bets and BB calls or raises, I can comfortably fold. With one player showing interest and me left to act behind him, BB will only continue with very strong hands.
If MP1 checks, then BB will have the worst relative position on the river. He can’t expect either me or MP1 to bet most river cards after the turn checks through, so if he has a big hand, he’ll have to bet it himself. If he bets into both of us on the river, I’ll be able to fold, and if he checks, I’ll consider value betting.
BB’s bad luck was my good fortune, because if he had folded the turn, I would have gotten it in with MP1. I wouldn’t have been thrilled, but you absolutely do see these randoms overplaying KT or A7 or even AQ in the Million.
