In Texas Hold'em, probeer je altijd de beste 5-card (vijf kaarten) hand te maken. In spellen waar je met meer dan vijf kaarten werkt (7-stud, Omaha, hold'em, etc), moet je de overige kaarten niet gebruiken. Let op dat in casino spelen de kleur niet uitmaakt in de rangschikken van de hands. Dus wanneer bijvoorbeeld twee spelers allebei een royal flus hebben dan delen ze de pot. Een schoppen royal flush verslaat geen ruiten royal flush enzovoort.

De volgende laat de rangschikking van de handen zen van hoog naar laag.

Straight Flush/Royal Flush

Een straight flush bestaat uit vijf opvolgende kaarten van dezelfde kleur. Bijvoorbeeld:

Een aas kan gelden als het begin of einde van een straight flush (A-2-3-4-5 of 10-J-Q-K-A). Een royal flush is een benaming voor een straight flush van de 10 tot de aas van dezelfde kleur en is de beste hand mogelijk in poker:

Four of a Kind

Deze hand bestaat uit vier kaarten van dezelfde rang:


Full House

Deze hand bestaat uit drie kaarten van dezelfde rang en twee andere van dezelfde rang. Bijvoorbeeld:

In de hand hierboven zou je zeggen dat je "jacks full of twos." hebt. Wanneer twee speler full houses tegelijkertijd hebben, dan verslaat degene met de hogere 3 of a kind de andere. Dus jacks full over tweeën verslaat vieren full over vrouwen.
