“You can’t spend bets.” This nugget of wisdom came from a friend of mine during a discussion about whether we would rather be up bets or up dollars. When you play multiple stakes it is possible to be up bets and down money if you lose at higher limits and win at lower limits. I took the stance that for a reasonably small period of time, I would rather be up bets if I had to choose. Being up in dollars is nice, but I feel the bets number keeps me more confident that I am beating the games and can expect to win in the future. As long as I keep winning bets, eventually dollars will follow. "
Up bets and down money is exactly the situation I find myself in at the beginning of 2008. I had one bad trip to LA playing higher limit and one mediocre one. I have done pretty well online to mitigate the live losses, but that has come at lower limits. I have also been playing less overall as I prepare to move out to LA. Once I get out there I am just a couple nice days away from being up dollars for the year, so I expect the slump to end soon. Being up bets has done a lot for my confidence during this period. It is a much better way to look at limit winnings than looking at dollars.

I think I would have gone mad long ago if I was focused on dollars vs bets. I usually play pretty small games online, small enough to make the players in the $3/$6 live games I play in look like a bunch of high-rollers. I am down a bunch of money because of the live game, but am up in bets because of the online game. I've come really close to driving myself mad because I'm a huge loser in the live game, but a big winner online, though the quality of opponents in the live game is much worse than the competition I face online.
I don't play live very often, so a bit of bad luck in the few sessions I've booked has me down a ton of money, but realistically I'm probably only down 30 to 40 bets in live play.
