Daily Poker Quiz: Ace King with TPTK, facing a raise

6 Reviews (Login to Write a Review)

pokertable

The Situation: You are playing $2/$4 NL Hold 'Em 6-Max online and open AcKs under the gun to $16 and a decent TAG player in the cutoff calls the raise. You feel you are also viewed as a TAG player.

The blinds fold and the flop is Ah8d2c. There is $32 in the pot and you lead for $23. The cutoff then raises to $70. Both of you have around $600 at the start of the hand. How do you play it? Vote / Comment below!

If the pot is $32, the room is stealing money, so I close my account.
SB : $2.
BB : $4.
My raise : $16.
His call : $16.
Total : $38.

Maybe I am too passive, but I fold here. If the other player is in position and has been TAG, he probably has a decent hand. He could have been set mining and hit that 8. He could have A8 suited (doubtful). He could have AA or AK just like you.
Regardless, once he flats the raise in position, I think you have to have more than high pair high kicker to proceed in this hand on a raise? Tony Dunst, if you're out there, what would you do?

if u need to get it in on that flop ,,, if he out flopped u he out flopped u ,,, he could have AJ AQ KQ trying to find out if hes good , all u clowns would reraise with poket 8s so he has an A and if u reraise u got to much money in the pot to fold ,,, and calling oop is not a good idea unless he is super nit u should be good

I would fold
The opponent is a decent tag, so we can assume he knows that a big ace is quite a large proportion of our opening range. Therefore i feel that most thinking players would be unlikely to raise with their air, there is also no draws so that allows us to cut down our opponents raising range. Also the hands which we dominate(AJ, AQ)are pretty much bluff catchers in this spot.(most decent players probably just call-as their is little point raising against a tag player who is unlikely to spew their money away.) Therefore we are left with 4 hands which our opponent is likely to have; AA, AK, 88 OR 22. 3 out of the 4 have us crushed and 1 we split with. If he's got AK its pretty much a positional cooler, as there is no real way we can put him on AK over the other hand possibilities. Therefore its a preety easy fold in my nit opinion. Also if you are unable to fold Ak in that spot, or believe his range to be greater and his hand strength weaker. I believe the best approach, when remaining in the hand is to just call the raise, and then just check call the remaining streaks. It is not neccessary to protect your hand, as when your ahead you have him crushed holding a weaker ace. (Him having only 3 immediate outs) Also by him raising with a weaker ace, he is likely doing so to find out where he is in the hand. By us raising where telling him he is behind. Whereas the passive approach allows him to value his hand much more. However i do believe a fold is the best option, this is because we are dominated to often of the time.
