Daily Poker Quiz: Trips Facing a Check Raise

3 Reviews (Login to Write a Review)

pokertable

The Situation: $1/$2 6-Max NLHE. The SB is a loose-passive player, both pre-and post-flop. The button is a loose aggressive player who opens frequently from the button and nearly always continuation bets. You all have around $350 behind.

It's folded to the Button who open raises to $6. The SB calls, and you decide to call as well with Qd 9d.

The flop comes AsQcQh. The SB checks and you check, hoping to check-raise the field, but are disappointed when the Button checks behind.

The turn card is the Kc. The SB checks again and you bet $15. The Button folds, but now the SB check-raises you to $45.

raising is the worse option, far worse then folding.
remember, its a loose PASSIVE SB. And a passive guy suddenly comes in with the most aggressive style of play (namely the checkraise).
He must have a good hand here. Possibly JT, or perhaps some holding you can beat like AK (thats why you cant fold).
I'd just call and probably call the river as well.

I'd FOLD and look for a better situation.
A dangerous flop and turn card.
A passive player is unlikely to bluff and usually only bets strong hands.
The SB may be ahead with a straight, a full house or trips with a higher kicker. Two pairs or trips with a lower kicker are also possible. The hero is losing to most of these hands and the SB could also improve after the river.
I would not expect a passive player to check raise with top pair.
If the hero calls the turn, he may draw to a worse full house and call a larger bet on the river.
