When playing in Freerolls of say 6000 people or less you can come in the money, which is normally the top 260 players just by increasing your chip count by about 5x and laying low the rest of the tournament. I have done this with great success more often than not.
What I like to do is go all-in with my big hands pre-flop as early as possible, so as not to waste too much of my time getting knocked out later and receiving nothing for my time. So in this situation if you have a big hand pre-flop and go all-in and double up, then you are half way home. One more double up with a pre-flop all-in bet and that should be enough chips to coast into the top 260. Now I am not saying to not play any more hands. If you get dealt bullets in the hole, well then obviously you play that hand. Even more chips is going to be more helpful than the amount you truly need.
Now when you have 5000 chips or more the blinds are not a factor until there are about 500 people left. When you are at the 500 person left level try and stall as much time per hand. I know this sounds cowardly, but hey its all about making the top 260 and getting paid. You also need to take advantage of your time bank. After playing for over an hour or more, your time bank most often will have over 200 seconds accumulated. Make sure to use all of your time sometime before the 500 player mark and after the 260 player mark. Remember while you are stalling, people are playing and being knocked out. When you use your 200 seconds during that wait, over 25 plus people will be knocked out.
This may not be for you, but it is effective for cashing. Good Luck All.
