Phil Hellmuth likes making it easy for me
from Bond18. 5 October 2008, 14:14.

Every now and then I write something where I criticize the play of Phil Hellmuth. I maintain to this day that while Phil certainly isn’t ‘bad’ in the sense that he’s unprofitable in live tournaments, he is ‘bad’ in the sense that he’s fucking clueless with pot odds, stack sizes, position, math, playing thinking players, and especially ranges.

Every time I state stuff like this (also known as stating the obvious) a couple dozen Phil Hellmuth supporting mouth breathers come out of the woodwork and snap at me with comments like “OH MY GOD, WHAT DO YOU KNOW BOND!? DO YOU HAVE 11 WSOP BRACELETS? NO? THEN WHO ARE YOU TO QUESTION PHIL!?!?!?” then they return to drooling on themselves while losing money at .05/.10 and masturbating to bestiality porn. And thank God for those mouth breathers to, otherwise I might forget the true measure of a poker player’s skill is how many bracelets they’ve won by beating up on the softest live poker fields in world (WSOP NLH events) and not their ability to make optimal decision after optimal decision. Again, I thank you mouth breathers for clarifying this for me.

Luckily Phil does a lot of work to make my argument about his play for me. I thought he’d never top his K6o raise/fold, but it turns out I was very wrong. I refer you to this link:
http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=33usfhh&s=4

Note how Matusow nearly has a seizure when he sees Phil’s cards.

Anyway, this will be my last serious day online for about a week. Tomorrow morning I head off to New Zealand for APPT Auckland. Before the tournament I’m doing a day long seminar there with Joe Hachem and Lee Nelson among other excellent players and poker thinkers. If anyone is attending Auckland let me know so I can say hello.

The main event is a $2500 USD buy in and the high rollers event is about $6500 USD. Unfortunately the high rollers is on the second day of the main event, so if you last through the first day no high rollers for you. I’m not sure why they put it their, but Danny McDonough (the APPT tournament director) is a smart guy so I’m guessing it was the only time realistically available. I may or may not blog the trip, after having done the ‘Around the world in 90 days blog’ I’m a little worn out on trip report style blogging, but I’ll be taking notes at the table in case things get interesting.

Can't you find something better to blog about than berating one of the top Hold'em tourney players in the world?

Hopefully you're just getting in on the act and making a joke. If not, find me one other poker blogger who has spent as much time being productive and educational as I have.

I blog about whatever interests me at the moment, and I'd call that video pretty damn interesting.

For me the most annoying part of that episode of PAD is that because Phil was such a card rack, AA and KK pretty much every hand, he got to HU which means that non thinking players, but even more annoyingly, phil thinks that decision was correct which could not be further from the truth. Another play which was awful was his 55 limp call pre OOP when he had under 10 BB's. So he had to flop a set to win. SO FUNDEMENTALLY BADDDDD.

Wow, 1st off all, I want to state I'm not a Hellmuth fan and mostly agree with everything people have to say about him being obnoxious, cocky and all that other stuff. But I really think you could have done without the whole "Mouth Breathers" stuff.

And this just seems a bit over the top no matter who you're talking about.
"then they return to drooling on themselves while losing money at .05/.10 and masturbating to bestiality porn."

You're part of a company, think about it, your actions might have consequences one day, but mehh, w/e you probably don't care what a nobody thinks.

ce1ska,

Absurdly over the top insults is just kind of a staple of my writing style. I mean, I could keep it all clean and well mannered, but when it comes to the blog I just kinda want to have fun with it.

I respect that it's not up everyones alley, and if Pokersavvy decides the content of my blog is a little too out there and decides not to have me post it then I'd understand and I'd go back to only hosting it over at tworags.com.

That said, I wouldn't change anything about the way I write or talk just to please a company and take a paycheck, as much as I honestly enjoy working with Savvy. I'd rather be poor and myself than wealthy and feel like a faker. You know?

Keep up your writing style Tony, dug them on tworags. Pllleeease don't change a thing, your honesty and bent humor are a welcome change.

These days it seems that most writers have a agenda, use "political correctness" as a way of kissing ass and putting their spin on things. Like those retarded baboons in DC.

* I'm sorry for insulting the retarded baboon community by comparing them to our elected public officials. The baboons deserve better.

It would still be a horrible lay down IMO....

I think some of you are missing the point. Its not that if the other guy had aces or kings. The other guy raised 3x from ep. Phil hollywooded around for like 5 min for a 3x raise then folded. TERRIBLE LAYDOWN, he could of cold called and re-evauated on the flop or reraised PF. Both better choices.

But the whole point is when PHIL does stuff like that, he makes an easy target to rag on. Because he is "Phil Helmulth the greatest NLHE player of all time". LOL

LOL I wish i could dodge bulletts! Anyway if only phil was half the player he thought he was. I trying to decide what is worse to watch dr. phil or phil helmuth??

Thank you tony, it is nice to see someone who says what he thinks and if people are offended by it, they dont have to read it. Maybe those people should take up checkers or uno.

Keep up the good work!

I also disagree with the fold, primarily because of the winner take all format. But i think you went a little far in the Hellmuth bash. I think that you touched upon one of the keys to his game, beating up on aweful players. He acts the way he does and makes losing EV plays like this but does have tremendous success. I think he understands how people are going to react to his game, and i think he does alter his strategy against thinking players. He just was not sure how to classify the kid in this video, because he knew nothing about him besides him playing the nutts. You, and many others pride yourselves with vastly profitable EVs and winning in tough tables, which is truely impressive. But I think there is something to be said about making money and winning tourneys against bad players. Overall i agree with you but i guess i would have just takin a different line about Hellmuths approach to the game.
