I skimmed Caro's Book of Tells a long time ago and the only valuable things I got out of it are the hand twitch towards the chips when the flop comes out and the apparent carelessness of a player that suddenly raises. I should go reread the book, but here is a list of tells that I've picked up just playing in my home game:
If someone apparently doesn't care about the turn or river card when betting, they'll usually have a monster or they're already pot-commited and will push no matter what. This happens when they prepare their bet as the dealer is preparing to turn the card over and they bet at the same time they look at the card. They didn't really care what the card was going to be. I don't see this activity from people bluffing.
Trying hard to read opponents and then betting is a bluff from the novice player. They are trying to detect something about your hand, which means that their hand is beatable. I can usually move someone off their hand if they try studying me before they bet. The only exception is if they are trying to read you in order to extract the most that they can.
Another tell is when a player has been chatting it up for the last 5 minutes, looks at his cards and suddenly gets serious and silent. Watch out for a monster. The inverse is true too. If someone hasn't said a word in the last 5 minutes and suddenly wants to be the table captain after looking at their cards, I'd watch out as well.
If someone looks like they are thinking hard before the hand and looking at other's stacks thinking about their position, then they may be preparing to make a stand or carry out a bluff. If they come out betting, there is a good chance they are making said move.
The stop and go move where the go is a small bet relative to the pot usually means a drawing hand, both online and live. If they call a large bet on the flop and lead into you with a minimum bet, I would just bet the pot at them taking away any odds they wanted and/or just taking the little bet they made.
There also seems to be a correlation of personalities to the type of player a person is. Quiet/intimidated players are usually rocks. Talkative friendly guy is usually loose/passive. Trash talker is usually loose/aggressive. The strong/confident personality could have any playing style, but these are the only types that I know of as truly tight/aggressive.
Have any tells to add?
