Review of Harrington on Hold Em Vol II

Harrington on Hold'em (HOH) was originally intended to be one big book, but due to space considerations, according to Harrington, HOH was split into two volumes. I found this to be very practical as HOH1 brought the fundamentals of what is required for successful NLHE tournament play. However, HOH2 is definitely the gem of the series as it brings forth much more advanced and ultimately beneficial concepts to the table.

HOH2 begins with the "Making Moves" section, which Harrington says was originally supposed to be part of the last chapter of HOH1. Continuation bet? Squeeze play? Post-oak bluff? These are all part of the repertoire of good tournament players and you can't afford to be left in the dark.

The next two sections are quite possibly the most important tournament concepts you will ever learn. They revolve around "Inflection points." In math, inflection points are points on a function where it changes direction. For poker, inflection points are how your strategy changes in relation to the blinds and antes. Harrington brings this concept about with "M" and "Q" ratios.

The last two sections revolve around extensive discussion of short tables and heads-up play. Developing these endgame skills are absolutely crucial if you want to get deep and even win tournaments.

As seen in HOH1, HOH2 follows the style of addressing the theory behind the concepts and following it up with real-life examples, questions, and analysis. This format makes sure that the reader fully understands the content they've read.

Simply put, HOH2 has single-handedly revolutionized the landscape of tournaments. Today, although players are already moving beyond Harrington's works, HOH remains the foundation for all successful tournament players. It is a must read.
